Characteristics This rolex datejust 41 6600 from the early 2000s is the last true aluminum-bezel, 40 mm professional diver before Rolex moved to ceramic (126600). Built for saturation diving and commercial underwater work, it carries the legendary 4,000 ft (1,220 m) rating thanks to the Ringlock case system and helium escape valve at 9 o’clock. The black dial has developed a pleasing tritium patina over time — a look many collectors prefer over modern LumiNova versions — while the Mercedes hands and oversized markers remain highly legible. The blue aluminum bezel insert has aged naturally, adding authentic vintage character that newer Cerachrom models simply cannot replicate.
The Calibre 3135 inside is a proven COSC-certified workhorse with quickset date and rock-solid reliability. The 10-link Oyster bracelet offers classic Rolex tool-watch durability and comfort.
Comes complete with original box & papers and carries two RSC service records — excellent provenance for a watch of this age.
Comparison vs Other Brands & Models (2025 perspective)
- Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167A or Nautilus 5711/1A are sport-dress icons with superior finishing and prestige. Prices $60k–$150k+ pre-owned. Patek wins on rarity and movement artistry, but max WR is 120–300 m. The 16600 delivers genuine saturation capability and far better value retention at a fraction of the cost.
- Cartier Santos-Dumont or Pasha Diver interpretations offer high-fashion elegance ($6k–$18k pre-owned). Beautiful design, but WR usually 30–300 m and often quartz movements. Rolex 16600 provides mechanical pedigree, 1,220 m rating and significantly stronger resale — superior for function-first buyers.
- Omega Seamaster Diver 300M or Planet Ocean 600M give excellent modern alternatives with Co-Axial / METAS movements (£4k–£9k pre-owned). Omega offers great value and finishing, but lacks Rolex’s resale power and historical saturation-diving heritage. The 16600’s helium valve and vintage aluminum bezel give it unique technical and collector appeal.
- Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Divers or Sport Collection models bring Zaratsu polishing and exceptional accuracy (£4k–$10k pre-owned). Superior finishing for the money, but weaker global recognition and resale vs Rolex. The Sea-Dweller 16600 remains the benchmark for proven deep-dive capability.
- Oris AquisPro or Aquis Depth Gauge offer impressive 300–1,000 m ratings and in-house movements (£2k–£5k pre-owned). Fantastic value, but no match for Rolex brand equity or extreme depth rating. The 16600 is the stronger long-term investment and heritage piece.
- Breitling Superocean Automatic 44 or Professional divers provide bold styling and solid 1,000–2,000 m ratings (£4k–£8k pre-owned). Breitling brings distinctive looks, but weaker resale and less saturation pedigree. Rolex 16600 offers cleaner aesthetics and legendary status.
In 2025 the 16600 remains a collector favorite as the last “classic” aluminum-bezel Sea-Dweller — before Rolex modernized the line with ceramic and larger cases. Double RSC history, full papers and good vintage condition make this example particularly desirable. It offers genuine 4,000 ft capability that few production watches can match, together with strong resale within the Rolex watches ecosystem.
